The dilatometer test can show with sufficient accuracy whether a coal has good coking power (corresponding to a dilatation of 50 to 140), poor wking power (zero or less than zero), or excessive coking power (higher than 140). However, the test does not reveal the reasons for differences in coking power of blends having the same yield of volatile matter. This question can be studied further by microscopic analysis. For a relatively complete appraisal of a coking coal, analyses of maceral groups, macerals, and lithotypes have to be conducted in addition to the determination of rank and analysis of coal type.
